Watchung Elementary School MLK Day of Service Opportunity - As part of the celebration of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Watchung Elementary School is having a service day for Watchung students to participate in activities that positively support our community service day for children

Composting and Recycling Club - Mrs. Thorp is looking for a few parent volunteers to lead a composting/recycling club at Watchung. The club would be made up of the parent advisors and interested students (with guidance from Mrs. Thorp).

The club would be in charge of...
*developing goals for the school around composting/recycling
*speaking to each homeroom about our initiatives (4th/5th grade speakers)
*making signs to educate the students about what can/cannot be composted and recycled
*monitoring the clean-up time in the lunchroom to be sure all garbage goes to the correct bin. (Start small-one day/week, then hopefully students can take over for other days)
*put the compost where it belongs after last lunch (outside bin in DIGS garden or worm composter in greenhouse)

If interested, please email Mrs. Thorp.

Pets on the playground/field – Now that we are in the new year, I am sending a reminder that pets are not allowed on the field or playground. There is a sign posted on the fence. I have received a number of emails of concerned parents/members of the community that this continues to happen. Please make sure you are abiding by all posted signs. I appreciate your cooperation.

Lost & Found – Our Lost & Found is over-flowing. PLEASE make sure you write your child’s name on everything! If we see a name, we do our best to get it back to them. If there is no name, it ends up in the lost and found. Parents can come and check the lost and found at any time, just check in at the main office. It is located on the bottom floor near the Spanish classroom.

Notes from the PTA:

UPDATE: We have to reschedule our PTA General Membership meeting originally scheduled for tomorrow night 1/7 because most of the PTA leadership and our families are down for the count, struck by the post-holiday plague. Please stay tuned for our new date!

Winter ASE is here! Registration is now open on the PTA Marketplace through January 12th Winter ASE starts January 27, 2020 and runs through April 1, 2020.

Family Bowling event - Tickets are selling out fast for our Family Bowling event at Eagle Rock Bowling Lanes this Sunday, January 12th. This event is always a blast so click here for full info, and please purchase your tickets here. A limited number of tickets have been set aside for families who might not otherwise be able to attend, please contact Megan Lukas for more information.

Birthday book program - The birthday book program is looking for help with donations of new books. Are you in the publishing industry (or know someone who is) and might be able to get discounted new books for the program? If so, please contact Jen Bonnell or Joanna Desmond-Stein. Also when purchasing books for gifts this holidays, consider buying an extra book for the birthday book program!

Enjoy your weekend!
